The Town of Diamond Valley was created on January 1, 2023, when the towns of Turner Valley and Black Diamond amalgamated. The acreages around it, in Foothills County, stretch along the Sheep River valley and up into the foothills toward Kananaskis Country.
This is where Alberta's oil and gas industry began: the Dingman No. 1 discovery well came in at Turner Valley in 1914, and the Turner Valley Gas Plant is now a provincial and national historic site. That history is why the energy-well search matters more here than almost anywhere in the region. The land varies by about 200 m within five kilometres of the town.

Is the Turner Valley Gas Plant a historic site?
Yes. The Turner Valley Gas Plant, in what is now Diamond Valley, is a Provincial Historic Resource (1989) and a National Historic Site of Canada. The Dingman No. 1 well struck wet natural gas there on May 14, 1914, launching Alberta's petroleum industry.
